Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk

  • 1 cup (240ml) hot water

For the Chocolate Ganache:

  • 1 cup (170g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • ½ cup (120ml) heavy cream

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat & Prepare

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3: Combine Wet Ingredients

  • In another bowl, beat eggs, then add buttermilk, oil, and vanilla.

  • Gradually mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients until smooth.

  • Slowly pour in hot water while stirring (batter will be thin).

Step 4: Bake

  • Divide batter evenly between the two cake pans.

  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  • Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 5: Make Chocolate Ganache

  • Heat heavy cream in a saucepan until steaming (do not boil).

  • Place one cake layer on a plate and spread a thin layer of ganache.

  • Top with the second layer and pour remaining ganache over the top, letting it drip down the sides.
