- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy:
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz (225g) mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- 1/2 tsp thyme
- Salt & pepper to taste
For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 lbs (900g) Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled & cubed
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup (60ml) milk (or heavy cream)
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup sour cream (optional)
- Salt & pepper to taste
Garnish (Optional):
- Fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Salisbury Steak
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well but do not overwork.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties (about 1/2-inch thick).
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
Step 2: Make the Mushroom & Onion Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and mushrooms, sautéing for 5-6 minutes until softened.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well to coat. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes until thickened.
- Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Cook the Garlic Mashed Potatoes
- While the steak simmers, boil potatoes in salted water for 12-15 minutes until fork-tender. Drain well.
- In a small saucepan, heat milk, butter, and minced garlic until butter melts.
- Mash the potatoes, then gradually stir in the garlic butter mixture and sour cream (if using). Season with salt and pepper.
Step 4: Serve
- Spoon a generous portion of garlic mashed potatoes onto each plate.
- Top with a Salisbury steak patty and smother with mushroom onion gravy.
- Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
