  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

For the Mushroom & Onion Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz (225g) mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs (900g) Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled & cubed
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk (or heavy cream)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Garnish (Optional):

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Salisbury Steak

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well but do not overwork.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties (about 1/2-inch thick).
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Mushroom & Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and mushrooms, sautéing for 5-6 minutes until softened.
  2. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well to coat. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes until thickened.
  6. Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes.

Step 3: Cook the Garlic Mashed Potatoes

  1. While the steak simmers, boil potatoes in salted water for 12-15 minutes until fork-tender. Drain well.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat milk, butter, and minced garlic until butter melts.
  3. Mash the potatoes, then gradually stir in the garlic butter mixture and sour cream (if using). Season with salt and pepper.

Step 4: Serve

  1. Spoon a generous portion of garlic mashed potatoes onto each plate.
  2. Top with a Salisbury steak patty and smother with mushroom onion gravy.
  3. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
